WHY MANDELA VISITED GADDAFI IN 1997 — AN AFRICAN LESSON THE WEST HATED

Written by Westgate Junior || 237 Leopard

In October 1997, Nelson Mandela did something the West could not understand — and could not control.
He traveled to Libya to meet Muammar Gaddafi, at a time when Libya was under heavy UN sanctions and global isolation.

Mandela did not fly.
He traveled by road from Tunisia to Tripoli, deliberately bypassing the air embargo.

That act alone was a message.

This visit was not ignorance.
It was African memory, loyalty, and dignity in action.

🌍 WHY MANDELA WENT — THE FACTS THEY SKIP

• Gratitude: When the ANC was branded “terrorist” by the same Western powers preaching morality today, Gaddafi supported the anti-apartheid struggle with funds, training, and weapons. Mandela never forgot who stood with Africa when Africa was bleeding.

• African Solidarity: Mandela made it clear — Africa does not abandon its own to please foreign powers. Friendship is not erased by sanctions written in distant capitals.

• Independence of Thought: Mandela openly rejected Western pressure, saying:

> “Those who were friends with us in the past will remain our friends.”

• Peace, Not Submission: Mandela also went as a mediator, urging Libya to resolve the Lockerbie issue peacefully — not through bullying, but through dialogue.

⚠️ WHY THE WEST WAS ANGRY

Because Mandela reminded the world of an uncomfortable truth:

👉 Africa does not need permission to remember its allies.
👉 Africa does not need approval to act with dignity.
👉 Africa does not owe loyalty to powers that once funded apartheid.

The same governments criticizing Mandela had: • Called him a terrorist
• Imprisoned him by silence
• Supported the apartheid regime
• Refused to sanction South Africa when Black people were being slaughtered

Yet they suddenly wanted to lecture Africa about “values.”

🔥 THE DEEPER PAN-AFRICAN LESSON

Mandela’s visit was not an endorsement of every Libyan policy.
It was a declaration:

Africa must define its friendships, its justice, and its future.

That is why this moment still matters today — especially as African leaders who resist foreign control are again labeled “problems.”

History repeats when lessons are ignored.
