What is African Spirituality?
African Spirituality refers to the collection of ways in which African Culture and Peoples relate to the Spiritual(Spirit +Ritual).
It refers to the Cultural Philosophies and Traditional Beliefs behind it as well as the practices and rituals that give expression to that relationship.
The Traditional African Beliefs and Practices of African People are a set of highly diverse beliefs that include various African National Spiritual Expressions which we collectively refer to as African Spirituality from a Pan African Perspective of African Culture and Continental Consciousness.
How do one go about praying in African Spirituality and what process should you follow?
Step One: You should have an area set aside for the purpose of praying.
Step Two: Light a candle and light incense or sage in order to invoke the Great Spirit. In the absence of candle and incense, use water and pour libation.
Step Three: Introduce yourself to your Ancestors by your full name.
Step Four: Call the name of Izithunywa(Universal Guardian Spirit) with whom you wish to communicate.
Step Five: Talk to your Ancestors as you will normally talk to your Grandparents.
Take Aways,Additional Details and Questions to Ponder.
* The Bible is a religious history of the Israelites.
* This is not your history ,but theirs.
* According to their Bible, the People of Israel were chosen as the Hebrew God’s People .
* Because of this they had a special covenant(Covenantal People of Israel) between themselves and God(YHWH/Yahweh/Jehovah). They were to follow his commandments and he would protect them, bless them , and lead them into the Holy Land. If they did not follow his commandments he would punish them severely.
* It would not be correct for Africans to claim all these blessings and fear the punishments because no special covenant was made between us and the Hebrew God.
* Celebrating all Bible victories means unknowingly celebrating your own losses( beginning with the genocide of the First Born of Egypt/Kemet,Plague and pestilence of Egypt and finally the destruction of the African Civilisation of Ancient Egypt. Ancient Egypt was a Black African Civilisation).
* The Israelites were told not to worship any foreign gods. The God that you believed in before Christianity was introduced to you was a foreign god to the Israelites.
* This gives further evidence that all people had their own version of their God. Africans had their own God that they believed in originally. The God they believed in and worshipped was their True God.
* Worshipping the God of Israel as an African is worshipping a foreign god.
Christianity had the following negative effects on Africa :
* It demonised Africa’s belief in our Ancient God.
* It led to the loss of our African names.
* It led to the loss of the African Culture and Identity.
* It led to the loss of most African Knowledge, History and Ancestry.
* It was the conduit through which colonization came to Africa, leading to the loss of our land to the White Minority.
* It was a conduit through which colonisation came to Africa, leading to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, through which many died.
* It was the conduit through colonisation which resulted in the genocide of the Africans from Cape to Cairo, Morocco to Madagascar.
* Through Christian Colonization, Africa’s raw materials as cobalt, platinum ,uranium ,gold, diamonds and oil have been and continue to be looted by the Christian Conceptual West Imperialist Countries.
If you worship the God of the Enemy of your Ancestors, you are your Ancestors Enemy.
Judaism, Christianity and Islam should be perceived by the African Consciousness the same way Nazism is perceived by the Jewish Consciousness.
