Brilliant Architecture and Star Observation
Living in an earthquake-prone area, the people of Caral devised unique architectural techniques. They constructed platforms reinforced with shicras—woven bags filled with stones—that helped absorb and distribute the impact of seismic waves, significantly reducing earthquake damage.
Their curiosity wasn’t limited to the ground. Caral built an underground observatory, complete with a roof and staircases, to observe the night sky. Using stone alignments, they were able to track the movement of the Sun, Moon, and stars, demonstrating their advanced understanding of astronomy.
Controlling the Elements
The Caral civilization also showcased its mastery over natural forces long before such knowledge was widespread. They cleverly utilized the Venturi effect—recognized centuries later in Europe—to control airflow and fire. By building underground ventilation shafts, they kept fires burning efficiently without the need for constant attention.
